Along Karmelicka Street there were shops selling food, bread, braided sweet white bread, cakes and fruit. In front of the gates in Nowolipki and Smocza Streets there were stalls full of food. Despite the hunger pervading the ghetto the hungry mob started stealing food only on a couple of occasions (on the day before the holiday). The author claims that the apathy, which is characteristic of people swollen because of starvation, caused this strange behaviour.
