They lived in Warsaw - the father and older brothers worked with tricot clothing. Just before the war the mother died. Szlama graduated from the 3rd class. His father died with tuberculosis. The flat was burned after a bombing. The oldest brother went to the army and returned from captivity wounded. They lived at their aunt's flat. The older brothers initially worked, traded. The uncle who worked in a bakery was helpful. The older brothers escaped to Russia and sent parcels. The closure of the ghetto and winter brought poverty, the uncle stopped to help, the brothers did not send parcels. Famine. Thanks to the ladies from the Centos (the Central Organisation for Orphan Care) Szlama and his brother went to the half-boarding house at Nowolipki Street No. 25
