Before the war, she lived in Warsaw at Stawki Street No. 73, flat 46. Her father worked in a metal factory. Her brother had just finished school and started to work in an electrotechnical shop. She finished fifth class when the war broke out. Their flat was destroyed during an air raid. Her father fell ill and spent several months in hospital. Her mother was selling out their belongings; they traded in sweets. Her father was taken to the labour camp and came back ill. Her brother left the family. They were starving. A lady from the patronage signed in the girl and her sister to the semi-boarding house at Nowolipki Street No. 25. They suffered from typhus, but recovered from it.
