Before the war he was a well-known doctor, the head of the ward in a big Jewish hospital in Warsaw at Czyste Street. He was also a well-known Zionist activist. In the ghetto he was a chairman of the Health Department. He participated actively in creating secret medical courses. Formally he was involved in Judenrat. In fact, he was involved in Jewish Social Self-Help and the TOZ (The Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population in Poland). He was also a major initiator of medical scientific research in the ghetto. After the First Action in October 1942 he wrote a preface to a book presenting results of the medical research done in the ghetto. He was the head of the Organisational Research Commission. On 8 January 1943 together with many other doctors he found himself on the Umschlagplatz where he gave a speech to Jews who were gathered there. He told them to go on the trains proudly, with their heads high. He and those dear to him decided not to go on the trains. They had morphine. One of the doctors gave him injection with strong dose of morphine. He died immediately.
