The bombing begins. The train has been evacuated three times. Everyone is scared and gaunt. They are close to the front lines. They hear a conversation between two guards. They have orders to move the Jews across Elbe River or kill them before the Allies arrive. David's terror escalates into panic. He persuades Solowejczik to talk to them. He beginns talking to the guards in his perfect German. He tells them that the war is almost over. Once it is over they will no longer have anyone to answer to, but themselves. He tells them that they should run before the Allies come, otherwise they will kill them. The German guards escape into the woods.
David turns and sees American tanks on the road. People start cheering, they try to run but have no strength.
